Festivals of Bihar has a strong bearing on the cultural heritage, traditions and the past history of the land. In fact, the festivals is the most important area in the study of people and culture of Bihar.

It goes without mention that religion forms the basis of the life-style of the people in Bihar. Further, the prevalence of the caste system has also facilitated this inclination towards their respective religion.

Among the most important festivals of Bihar are:

Navaratri - This is one of the major festivals of Bihar. This is a ten day festival where the people of Bihar worship Goddess Durga for nine days and on the tenth day, the idol of the Goddess is taken to the river and cast into it.

Holi - This festival of Bihar is known as the festival of colors. On this day, as the common ideology maintains, people forget all about their enmity and celebrate this festival with love and respect for each other.

Diwali - Diwali is another important festival of Bihar. In fact, the significance of this festival in Bihar lies in the fact that the 6th day from this festival is Chhattha.

Chhattha - This is the major festival of Bihar. On this occasion, people observe fast. In fact, it is a custom that before breaking their fast they offer milk, coconut and other fruits to the Sun God.
